Different regulations

Regulations have been made for all types of transportation of hazardous materials to ensure that transportation can take place safely. Transport regulations specify when substances must be classified as hazardous substances in a hazard class, packaging group and UN-number. Regulations are also given for exemptions, documents, packaging and transportation.

The regulations are made using the UN (United Nations) model regulation, also known as the orange book.

Because there are different regulations for all the different modes of transport, you also have to consider different rules for the same substances. This can cause quite a bit of confusion and, unfortunately, even penalties. Always consult an expert when transporting hazardous materials via other modes of transportation. The different types of transport are:

Regulations for road transport
(ADR)
Regulations for rail transport
(RID)
Regulations for inland water
(ADN)
Regulations for maritime transport
(IMDG)
Regulations for air transport
(IATA)
