When labeled packages are placed in a larger package or casing, this becomes an overpack.
The regulations include a requirement that when an overpack is used, where the required labeling and marking on the packages placed therein are not readily visible, the word “OVERPACK” with a minimum height of 12 mm to be applied. This also applies to smaller overpacks than 30 kg. In international transport, the words “OVERVERPAKKING” / “OVERPACK” / “UMVERPACKUNG” / “SUREMBALLAGE” must be affixed to the overpack in Dutch and additionally in English, French or German.
Overpacks shall bear the following markings and labels:
- UN numbers of the hazardous substances
- One or more hazard labels
- The word “OVERVIEW” in proper languages
- If necessary, the mark environmentally hazardous and/or pipe labels
